Wine and sustainability

Sustainability is a concept that is here to stay and is part of our society’s concerns. Etymologically, the word ‘sustainable’ comes from the Latin sustentare, which means to sustain, support and conserve. But its true dimension is much wider. As well as endeavouring to balance economic growth with environmental protection and social and personal well-being, it is encouraged that this balance should be continuous and long-lasting. In other words, it is a commitment for the present, but above all focused on the future.

In the world of wine, sustainability is one of today’s biggest trends.

To a greater or lesser extent, wine producers are increasingly concerned with minimising negative environmental, social and economic impacts, while adopting practices that benefit the ecosystem and the communities in which they belong.

Reducing pesticides, optimising irrigation, organic cultivation, adopting renewable energy sources, protecting and maintaining biodiversity in and around the vineyards are just a few practical examples of implementing sustainability in viticulture nowadays.

At Quinta Miradouro dos Dízimos, the woods, our orange trees, cherry trees, fig trees, apple trees and so many other fruit trees healthily cohabit with our vineyards, sharing the same water, the same soil and the same sun in a great harmony.
