The practice of tithing has occurred over the centuries in Jewish and Christian communities as a concrete act of thanking God, Nature and the Community for life and the blessings received. Material prosperity, harvests or income were thanked. By periodically returning a portion of their earnings to the community, tithers acknowledge the importance and value of what they have received in their lives, their interdependence with those who live alongside them and promote the common good. Family values we aim to raise.
The Sun and the Grapes, which we include on our emblem are an recognition of the magnificent gifts with which we are privileged every year.
Community Responsibility
In the Middle Ages, tithing had a crucial social function. The amount given was used to support the community and support services for those in most need and their families. The amount given not only recognised blessings but also served to sustain the community and support services for those in need. It generally corresponded to a tenth of an individual’s income but was given according to each person’s possibilities. This concept was later extended to the political sphere and the tithe became a compulsory legal tax to continue supporting the state’s social actions.
The Miradouro dos Dízimos, a peaceful and inspiring space, reflects the essence of our region’s terroir, its wine culture and the resilience of the local communities.
Reciprocity
Tithing emphasises generosity and giving as the central virtue of spiritual life, creating a link between the individual, the divine and the community. Giving is not just a material offering, it has a profoundly spiritual dimension: a dynamic connection between what has been received and what is given back.
Traditionally associated in the past as a gesture of faith and dedication, tithing is now reborn as a symbol of a new way of being. An invitation to give our 10% — of time, of listening, of attention — to those around us. Offering presence, delicacy, patience, even in the simplest gestures of everyday life.
Today, giving tithe is the silent “extra mile” that we choose to walk towards a more generous, balanced and conscious life. It is in this small gesture, so often invisible, that true communion with others, and with life, is revealed.
The bridge over the River Douro, a robust and durable structure, represents the capacity to overcome and also promotes the connection between people, ideas and cultures.
The coin represents offering, retribution and sharing, which are values associated with tithing, and reinforces the idea of respect for roots and commitment to community and sustainability, values that we live by every day at Quinta Miradouro dos Dízimos. Our Quinta is located in the place ‘Sítio dos Dízimos’, in the parish of Santa Marinha do Zêzere, in the municipality of Baião, Portugal.
With high probability, the name is related to the historical practice of collecting tithes, which took place in many regions of Portugal, especially during the Middle Ages. In Portugal, this practice was common and legally instituted until the 19th century.
The name also suggests that the region held agricultural importance and high production of goods, enough for the payment of tithes to be significant.

A prática do dízimo desenvolveu-se ao longo dos séculos nas comunidades judaicas e cristãs como ato concreto de agradecer a Deus, à Natureza e à Comunidade pela vida e pelas bênçãos recebidas, em termos de prosperidade material, colheitas, ou rendimentos. Ao devolver periodicamente uma parte dos seus ganhos à comunidade, a pessoa que pratica o dízimo reconhece a importância e valor daquilo que recebeu na sua vida, a interdependência com quem vive a seu lado e promove o bem comum.

Na Idade Média, o dízimo tem uma função social crucial. O valor dado não só reconhece as bênçãos, mas também serve para sustentar a comunidade e os serviços de apoio aos mais necessitados. Correspondia geralmente a uma décima parte dos rendimentos individuais mas era dado de acordo com as possibilidades de cada pessoa. Este conceito foi, posteriormente, alargado para a esfera política e o dízimo passou a ser um imposto legal obrigatório para continuar a suportar acções sociais do Estado.
Reciprocidade
O dízimo acentua a generosidade e doação como virtude central da vida espiritual, criando uma ligação entre o indivíduo, o divino e a comunidade. A doação não é apenas uma oferta material, mas tem uma dimensão profundamente espiritual, simbolizando uma ligação dinâmica entre o que foi recebido e o que é devolvido.

A nossa história
O conceito de “dízimo” (em latim, decimus) está profundamente relacionado com a ideia de “dar de volta” ou retribuir de maneira simbólica a Deus ou à comunidade por aquilo que se recebeu.
Podemos encontrar múltiplas forma do “dízimo” em diversas tradições religiosas e espirituais em todo o mundo, praticado sob três conceitos fundamentais: gratidão, responsabilidade comunitária e reciprocidade.
