Every year, a surprise. When will it be? Nature is in charge: first you have to realise how the grapes are doing, what they tell you about their ripeness, which is measured by the balance between sugar, acidity and tannins, and what you want for each wine. In warmer years, the grapes can be harvested earlier, while in colder years they can be picked later.
The grape harvest is one of the most important moments in the wine-growing calendar because it represents the culmination of all the work of an annual cycle, after the care of the vineyard, pruning, pest control, sulphation, irrigation, etc.
Poor timing can jeopardise the wine’s flavour, structure and even its longevity. It’s therefore the critical moment in the entire winemaking process because it combines not only agricultural but also sensory aspects and decisions, with a huge impact on what we want the end result to be: our wine.
What is certain is that it is always a day of hard work but also of great celebration and entertainment, of friendship and conviviality, of gratitude. Family and friends, from the oldest to the youngest, all united in the same mission.
Finally, don’t forget that the Harvest only really ends with the washing of the baskets.
